My First Sewing Project

One of my goals this year is to learn how to sew. My parents bought me a sewing machine for my birthday back in January and they keep asking me if I like my machine and if I had used it. Truth is, I had been feeling intimidated by it. I had never really used one before.

So I took a bold step, unpacked it and basically YouTubed my way through setting up the whole threading thing. (Thank goodness for youtube).

I took an old skirt I had and just cut out a basic heart. I bought some needles from Hobby Lobby and pinned the heart down on the onesie.

I tried so hard to sew in a straight line...any tips?

Next, I cut out strips of fabric to make a ruffle on the butt part of the onesie..

After I pinned the strips down I went to town on the sewing, I started on the bottom strip first and worked my way up.

How do you think I did on my first sewing project? I def. need lessons though, YouTube can only take me so far...

  2. Awesome job for your first time sewing! My parents got me a sewing machine for Christmas when I was 12 and then told me I'd start lessons soon. I was so thrilled..Not! Haha. Now I'm so very glad they did. My #1 tip for sewing straight is to take it slow and gradually increase the speed you sew at as you get more comfortable doing it. Before I ever got to sew anything, my teacher took all the thread out of the machine and had me "sew" along the lines of a piece of notebook paper. It seemed to really help, just takes patience. Good luck! :)
(Btw- There's also a ton of awesome tutorials on just about anything sewing. I'm still learning different techniques and will read probably 3 or 4 of them on the same topic until I feel confident I can do it!)
